Malayalam is the primary language of the state of Kerala in southern India, and belongs to the southern group of Dravidian languages. Malayalam has borrowed nouns, verbs and some basic vocabulary from Sanskrit. It is very close to Tamil, one of the major languages of the same family. This was primarily due to the extensive cultural synthesis that took place between the speakers of the two languages. As the language of administration and scholarship, Tamil influenced the early development of Malayalam.
