Gujarati includes characters for writing the Gujarati language. It is the state language of Gujarat in north-western India and is one of the 15 official languages of India. A formal grammar of the precursor of this language was written by Jain monk and eminent scholar Hemachandra-charya. It has a rich oral culture and a literary tradition which dates back to the 10th century. The construction of Gujarati can be considered somewhere between those of Hindi and Marathi. Gujarati does not have long vowels but maintains neutral gender.
